Breaking a model in flight
« on: July 21, 2015, 08:51:20 AM »
I've often heard people say "A pro pilot can break any helicopter in flight at will"  As my flying progresses and I find myself flying harder with complex control inputs this begs the question for me.  Just what combination and speed of inputs is most likely to "break" my heli in flight.  While I like some occasional smack I like it a lot less than I enjoy rebuilding and exploded helicopter.  I've also started playing around with some moderate overspeeds cause it makes me giggle but think I should stop short of bending my blade screws like Duncan does.  It would be good to know what things to take it easy with.  I'm only guessing here that very high speed to sudden negative stops is one possibility?

These come to mind:

1) The combination of running the main blades too loosely along with worn out dampeners may lead to a boom strike in aggressive maneuvers.

2) Suboptimal pinion to gear mesh that survives sports flying may cause issues when you start getting aggressive.

3) Although unlikely with the 1.25MOD Synergy tail gears, other helis may strip tail gears or damage worn out tail belts with too large tail blades at high rpm at the extremes of tail slider travels.

If you get a sense that you next flight will destroy the heli in mid-flight, please capture in video and post.   :D

Anytime you combine all of your cyclic with all of your collective you are at risk. The head speed decays....the rotor blades lag and KABOOM.

Specific moves to avoid...

1. Tail Slide with full aft elevator and full collective at the end.

2. Piro flips with full collective and full cyclic (this is usually in error, stationary piro flips require very little collective)

Also note, with FBL systems today a poor setup can  cause the gyro to strike back with wicked force. The amount of overhead correction you program into your unit is critical. Too much and it will boom strike for you, too little and the helicopter will not hold heading.

Hope that helps!

Thanks,

Matt

Hell im just happy to get it down in one piece  :) But since I got the E7se with 716 blades my autos are getting much better, E5 is tricky with the small blades  :)
