Motor, pinion and ESC question
« on: December 06, 2011, 06:13:01 PM »
Hi guys,
I'm looking into building an E7 and I was  just wondering what pinion and ESC you guys would recommond for hard 3D with the following components:

690 Rail blades
KDE DIRECT 700XF- 495kV HP BRUSHLESS MOTOR
12s Lipo (two hyperion 6s EX 4200 packs in series)

I was thinking a 13T pinion, but I'm not really sure what a good headspeed is for this bird.

In terms of the ESC, I've always been a castle fan, but with all the HV fires happening ( and still happening with ICE 2 HV coming out!) i'm leaning towards kontronik. I even had one of my ice lite 50's catch fire on me  :-[

Optimally I would like a ESC with a built in BEC that would be equivalent to a CC BEC Pro in terms of power output. I  would only be running 6v servos, no HV servos.

I run a 450kv motor with a 13T pinion on my E7 with a Kontronik esc. I am happy with how it flys and am running 2150rpm.  I am actually going to be switching it to an ICE 2 160A esc with a Western Robotics Hercules Super BEC after orlando. Only reason being is my Jive is only an 80HV. I haven't had an issue with it shutting down or coming down hot at all, just want the extra head room there. The ESC actually comes down surprisingly cool!  ;D

Best of luck!

-Steve

your 450kv motor will probably only see a max headspeed of 2000 with the castle ICE2 160. Though, castles head room is overly conservative.

I do love the logging features and PC adjustablity of castle controllers...I suppose the risk of damage to the heli is not that great in the event of a fire ( in terms of fire damage) due to the ESC mounting location. Though, a fire when the heli is low to the ground wouldn't be so much fun  :-[

*Also selling the motor with the esc lol forgot to put that in there. I already have the Hacker A50-12L 470kv that I will be using.

And any fire would suck! haha I have seen the ICE 2 controllers be put thorough some ABUSE!!!! and I have yet to see one even come down excessively warm... but that does not mean it can't happen.

Nice. You should easily get 2150 with that motor/esc combo.

Also, how reliable is the western robotics super bec and do you know if there is a torque tube kit on the horizon?

The Western Robotics is bullet proof from what I have seen. It has a simple switch to select 5.2V, 6V, 8.4V or 9V output and can handle 14V input. But it does come with a price  $100.

A torque tube kit should be very soon!! The conversion should hit by Christmas and the kit version should follow soon after.

I saw the price...though I might consider the extra cost insurance considering that the CC BEC Pro has been known to have issues on 12s. I know I could wire it up to one pack, but the wiring would end up a little messy.

sweet, I will definitely wait for the torque tube version to come out...my preference over belts.

I also noticed alot of people heat shrink 2 6s packs together to make one stick pack. I'm intending on using my 6s packs in my Gaui X5 and the Synergy E7. Are there any issues..like lipo packs parting company?

Probably need to use some gecko tape and 4 velcro straps.

I also noticed the lipos look exposed in a crash...does the battery tray offer much crash protection?

I have crashed me E7 once, and seen 2 other E7s crash. Each time they all had the same way of holding the batteries in place. 3 velcro straps on the batteries 2 on the back and one on the front, and some of the synergy velcro tape that comes with the kit on the front battery. I do NOT use any velcro tape on the rear battery and it is solid as can be. Making a stick pack will definitely be easier getting it in and out of the heli. I need to make them, just keep procrastinating I suppose.  ::)

Oh and NO damage was done to the batteries in and of the crashes I have seen.

gbidwell,

What did you end up going with?

I ordered the same motor and am looking for set-ups that people have used.

I new to the 700 elect class and I'm also looking for a trustworthy/reliable ESC.

From what I'm seeing all signs point to Kontronik. But those boys are $$$, plus I need to add a BEC to take advantage of the HV servos.
CC may be cheaper but it will be a long time before I ever trust Castle C again.

My E7 is still in the box waiting on the TT and a Heli Jive.

You could use the HeliJive at 6.0v for your HV servos, still good. Also you could use a YGE 160HV with a 2s lipos for servos. Also is the Scorpion new 130a esc with selectable servo voltage. I hear it's working great with v-bar governor.

Is this the Pyro 700-450L? Why are you going with the Hacker over the Pyro? I am curious because I am thinking about using a Pyro motor in an E7.

I am building an E6. I haven't had a heli with this much power before. Should green locktite be used on the pinion or is blue fine. I want to be able to remove the pinion if I decide to change it someday...

Blue would be fine! just make sure the Pinion and Grub screw is totally clean from any machining oil, being the loctite won't dry properly.!! If you ever feel that you want to swap pinions for a different configuration, just heat the pinion while still on the motor with a hair dryer and the loctite will release... good luck ;)
