Motor choice for 766
« on: October 02, 2017, 11:21:23 AM »
Here's my current dilemma. Building out a 766 and have 2 motor choices. Scorpion 4525 520U or KDE 700fx 495kv.  The KDE actually specs out at around 480kv and head speeds come very close comparing the KDE with 14t pinion and Scorpion with 13t pinion.  I've seen the video of Matt flying with the 4525 but lets be real, Matt can make a brick spinning chopsticks look awesome.  lol

Planning on 1500-1950 head speed (HW160v4) on 12s.  KDE is around 200g heavier probably with more grunt due to size and weight of motor.  Scoripon 200g less weight but possibly less low end grunt.  With the 766 being such a big bird will the 4525 be ok or will it be over taxed.  Mind you I don't have the collective or cyclic management like Matt (or most pilots on here).  Yes I can try both however I don't get to fly all that often. So trying a setup long enough to get used to the new heli let alone enough flights to get a good feel for differences might take me 6 months to a year. lol  I'd love to make the HeliSwarm event this week but I don't even know if I can get the 766 finished in time.

Yeah these KDE motors are a beast. I'm just wondering if the weight penalty is worth the difference in power. 1/2 pound is pretty significant. Guess I'll just have to try both. Although if I go 14s the kde will be my only choice available to me.

The extra weight isn't really a bad thing, as the model tends to be tail heavy.

Well it's good to have options...guess I'll just have to experiment.  Thanks for everyone's response!
