E5SS Winter Project

Hi, I am new to Synergy.  After seeing Josh Moen's E5SS and Low HS flying, I thought I would give it a try.  It might be a good fit to my old man reflexes.

I have not pulled the trigger yet, but for my winter project the following is what I am planning for a Low HS setup, unless I have overlooked anything.

E5SS with 696/106 blades and 4.91 tail ratio
Hacker A50-14L Turnado V3 (400KV) with 12T pinion
HobbyWing Platinum PRO V4 130A-HV ESC
Spirit Pro FBL
Futaba BLS272SV Cyclics
Futaba BLS276SV Tail
Light weight 12s LiPos, but heavy enough to balance

Hi Frank,

I've been flying an SS for a couple years now, currently at 1200~1300~1450 rpms in three modes. Suggest the venom 6s/5000 30C packs.  30C is PLENTY , you probably won't ever pull more than 15~20C even in an aggressive peak. Those packs are a shade under 23 ounces and most of the 5000/5500 packs are in the 28~32 ounce range, so you can save substantial weight.   I'm using flightpower 4350's which are only an ounce or so lighter, but less capacity. your choice of course, and you have great selections listed, but i like the 3470 servos on cyclic.  I'm using them in both an "SS" with 696/116  and an "S" with 606/106. They are not heli servos, they are car servos, but have worked for my lower headspeed setups without issue, and I'm even running them at 8volts. They're about an ounce lighter ea, so you same 3 ounces on swash control.

Thanks Gary for the battery recommendation.  They look like a great choice.  The BLS272SV cyclic servos will only be about 1.8 oz heaver than the S3470SV servos, but the cost is much higher.  I just don't tell my wife how much I spend.  As long as I can keep the overall weight under 10 lbs., I will be happy.

My setup is 9.75 lbs, but you'll be roughly 50 gramms heavier with the other servos and another 80gms with the venoms versus the 4350's I'm running. the ESC you've chosen is another ounce versus the Edge HV80 , although i'm using a castle bec pro and the hobbywing has one built it, so esc weight is a wash.  I don't see it being under 10 lbs.   extremely close though. Mine originally flew with 5500 packs, roughly a pound heavier than now, and flew fantastically. Going to the 4350's lost considerable capacity but the weight counteracted that, so it flies exactly the same duration on a pack but with that much weight loss it just flies a lot better. No loss of flight time really surprised me, but the weight difference truly negated the capacity loss.

I guess that I can live with "extremely close to 10 lbs."  This light weight E5SS heli will be a refreshing change from my other 700 heli, which is a Goblin 700 gasser that weights 14.25 lbs. without fuel.

I have had good luck with HobbyWing ESCs on my smaller helis.  It has an excellent governor that should work well with a wide spread of different headspeeds.  I though that the Castle ESC software is picky about headspeeds.

yes the castle governer leaves a lot to be desired.  If you run a single headspeed and have it geared properly the governer works well.  If you run a range of headspeeds several hundred rpms apart it isn't acceptable.  I set them to external governer mode and use the CGY750 governer. This works extremely well, just takes a bit to get it all working together.   The castle edge esc's have a seperate "white wire" that can be configured in the software to act as a phase sensor.  For my machine with a talon esc I have a hobbywing phase sensor wired in.

I received one of the Venom 6s 5000mAh 30C packs (the other one is on back order).  It is advertised as weighing 655g, but the one I received weighs 630g.

Have some for my 516,.. they vary a few grams but roughly what you've weighted.   They come with xt60 plugs, however, and have adapters to go to other plug types.  I think with the adpater they're probably at the published weight.

I finally finished my E5SS, but have not flown it yet.  It came in right at 10.0 lbs.  It was a enjoyable build and I cannot wait to get it in the air.
