Hi guys,

Team helis are out there and some feedback on your experience with the LIPOs you've chosen for your 516s could be helpful.

In the prototypes Rob was using Pulse 4500 45C and Matt had TP 4400 70C packs,
matched with the Scorpion 4020-1350kv motor (rated 1890w/90amp continuous) and CC Talon 90 ESC.

I've gone with the Xnova 4020-1350kv (rated 2500w/125amp continuous) and chosen a Hobbywing 120 V4 ESC to cover the higher amps draw. It adds about 60grams to the build compared to the prototypes, but the extra 600 watts on tap will more than take care of that.

Options for packs (best quality readily available in AUS) I'm considering are Gensace:
4000mah 60C 670g
4400mah 45C 675g
4400mah 65C 715-740g (stated weight varies across sellers and no spec available from gensace Europe).

Interested to hear what LIPOs you're using, how hard you're working the heli and how the batteries come back from a flight.

Im running the Xnova motor with HW 120A V4 with brain2 and mks servos.

The 4000 gensace is just a smidgen light on CG.  I would probably go with the 4400's and be about perfect.

I'm running Pulse 4100s with the old gen1 KDE 500xf and a 100A HW Platinum. My setup balances, but my packs are about as far forward as they can be. I would go for the 65c 4400s if I were you. My batteries have kept up well. No problems with sagging or getting too hot, even after flying hard at 2700. Don't get me wrong, they get pretty warm, but not too bad. As long as I bring em down on time they're perfectly good. Let them get down in that 3.6v/cell range, tho, and they start getting a little toasty... I may or may not have overflown my timer once having a little too much fun to be bothered with things like landing 😎

Ive seen the OFH 516 on FB 👍 and I'm expecting too much fun from mine when its built. But maybe without toasting the batts Danny D. 😂

Power never makes up for added weight. If that were true, we'd have 20lb helis and 20k watts on tap. What actually happens is the blades work harder and stall quicker, which is where you'll see the 600 watts being utilized. :)

I'm not trying to come off as negative, it's just that we invested a huge amount of time and energy to design a machine that is as light as possible given today's 3D requirements. Weight is the primary factor in any helicopter design.  Finding 60 grams to shave from a model this size is like searching for the holy grail.

Can save 30 grams using the futaba 173's instead of the other servos for the swash. Doesn't create cg issues.  I'm also using a 25 gram lighter motor (there's 55  of your 60 grams Rob :) ). problem with that is CG, so I'm a little more battery (venom 6s/5000's). Those packs with their plug adapter from the XT60 to deans that I use,.. balance each other out.

Hmm. I'm not sure given the options you listed. They all seem a little on the heavy side. The Pulse 4500's are 650g, so a 600g pack would probably do you well and still provide good CG results. Something the 4000 range?

Rob has a point, the motor I'm using is 70g lighter than your xnova. And my ESC is a hair lighter as well. If mine balances with 610g 4100s you should be fine with lighter packs. I apologize for not completely think your setup through.

I like your 30 gram savings (the Futabas fly very nicely). I'm not liking the 25 grams. LOL.

We still need an appropriate motor to achieve our performance target. :P

280 versus your 305 (I think that was the scorpion weight).  For the amounts of power i want (which is drastically different than yours), it's just fine,.. and I even have 200 gram motors to test (low kv for little 12s packs). I didn't put a little motor in there to begin with because I don't have packs to make 12s at the right weight.  Will need to be 730~760 grams.  Starting to get cold and windy so I probably won't be able to fly more than once or twice till spring. Should have time to find the right batteries for the little motors.
