hacker motor + Kontronik Jive = HOT
« on: January 22, 2012, 03:14:43 AM »
Hi All,

I was wondering if anybody use the same setup as mine.

I have a Hacker motor A50-12L 470KV and Kontronik Jive 120 (mode 11) installed on my E6 and I've been getting very hot temp on the motor and very warm on the ESC after every flight. On top of that I feel the motor is underpower.

I don't do smack 3D just normal sport flying and my headspeed is around 2050-2100.

I'm trying to find out what can cause this issue. Would appreciate any help.

A jive 120 at best should only be getting warm on that set up.

Couple things to check.

Pinion mesh - too tight?
Belt - too tight?

I don't know that motor but I got a 450kv pyro and this is one hell of a powerful Heli (E7) only running about 1900 so that motor may have an issue or just be pants I don't know either way :)

What PMW are is your ESC set at? I'm using the Hacker 470kv in my E6, but with a Kontronic 80HV ESC and it come down just warm.

Running a Hacker 470 and Jive 80HV mode 4  in my E6 on 14t pinion at 2300 hs. Motor comes down around 140f and esc is 105-115f, in 70deg ambient temp. These are normal temps.

what are your temps on motor and esc and what pinion, packs are you running ?

Anyone have a Jive 80+HV with a Hacker A50-10L-580kv. Any issues with gov, temps etc?

Unlike Castle, I don't think you set PWM on the Jives. At least I never have on mine.

I ran that combo, A50 12L with both Jive Hv80 and Hv120 in mode 4  for a few flights.
Never got much more than warm. Sorry didn't temp it because i didn't feel concerned.
I just run them in Mode 4 though.

gear mesh and belt seem OK and are not too tight.

not sure about the the exact temp (dont have temp gauge), Im running 14t pinion (around 65% flat throttle curve) and 12s 4000mah 40c.

I'll try to change the pinion to 13t and maybe set the ESC to KSA mode. Anybody knows how to set it up to KSA mode from mode 11?

Cheers

For mode 10 (KSA), you do mode 1 (reset) then mode 10. Make sure to put your throttle range back to -100 +100% before reset. After mode 10, you can recalibrate your throttle range.

I'm running an E7 w/ 12S TP 65C 4400, HeliJive 120 (v11) mode 4, Hacker Turnado 470kv, 14T pinion, 2100 rpm governed. My motor is coming down at ~145F, and ESC at ~120F, after light flying in ~70F ambient temps. The motor is very hot to the touch. This just doesn't seem right/good to me. I have checked pinion mesh already. Anything else? Solder joints, perhaps?

Hello bmclaurin,

Most motors are going to reach between 130-160F.
My Scorpions get up to 180, I've seen some other brands reach over 200F.
I would not start worrying about temps until you reach the 180F mark.

You can also give Mike Donovan a call at Aero-Model, he can give you specific temps the
Hacker 470kv motor can withstand. At IRCHA last year I tried a 580kv motor in my E7 with
the 12T pinion. Temps were between 185-190, I ran it like this for 3 months with no problems.
I eventually took to motor out to test another motor.

Thanks,

Matt
