How Hot Is Too Hot

Finally got some good flights in on my E7 but my CC 120hv is getting hotter then I believe it should. The castle log showed 180 degrees F, my motor feels about the same temp. Sorry didn't have my temp gun with.

I'm running the Hacker 470 and 14 tooth pinion at 2150 head speed. I have the 120 setup exactly like Matt suggested and am running version 3.?? (the one just before 4.0) There is nothing binding and the whole drive train is really free and smooth. My batteries are gen ace 4000's and am getting about 5 minutes per flight

Should I be concerned or is that just how they run?

I would be willing to run a slower headspeed, I don't need that much power. If I did go lower can I just program in a lower head speed or is it better to get a small pinion?

If I do that and re program the gear ratio in the CC software should I lower my head speed or leave it at 2150?

2150 is a bit much for CC gov and 13T. If you go to 13T try 1950 or 2000. Also, 180 seems rather hot for someone flying in the far north...;^) Do you fly fast and hard or hard smack? Even here is SoCal my ESC seldom gets above 140. Average of the last 4 flights at probably 70 f air temp was only 126. Of course I'm flying easy 3D/sport. I'm running the same motor and pinion at 2100 rpm. If you fly real hard or you lived in AZ and flew in 100 degrees, maybe 180 would be par.

I'm running the same setup and the same packs.  I decided 2150 was stupid fast and my gear was also very hot.  Dropped mine to 12T and now I run 1900 and couldn't be happier.  Motor runs about 130, ESC 120 and packs 100 degrees.  I fly pretty hard and still get 5 minutes.

I like to fly fast and big and the outside temp was around 90.

I have a 12 and 13 on order and am going to try a lower head speed. 2150 is pretty insane  :o

What part of the motor are you taking the temp reading at?

I find the temp reading get higher the closer you get to the motor mount. For instance, my normal temp taken at the top of motor (label) average
148-152 F, the Hacker motor can in the 160-170.  Yesterday the motor mount was 190, the 3mm frame to motor mount screws were 188.
The TP 4400 65C temp was 101, so was the Helijive.

E7, Hacker, 14T.

 I've Seen Darren "THE DOMINATOR" Lee beat the crap out of his bird, and his set up is spot on. I am going to reconfigure my 7 to his set up with the exception I am running the CC 160 and Different Bats. ;)

Ran mine this weekend for the first time

Hacker 470 KV Motor
CC 160 ESC
14T Pinion
2150 RPM on Head.
TP4400 MAH

After landing and taking off canopy to unplug battery, ESC was around 110 and Top of Motor was 150.   Seemed a bit hot, but not sure yet.   I have yet to DL the ESC file.

I went down to a 13 tooth pinion and lowered my hs to 2000. The temp was better but its still on the hot side. Going to try lowering the motor timing next.

Next time out I'll bring my temp gun but I can only hold my finger on my motor for less then a second and my CC data shows my esc maxing out at 160, when I land and get back to the pits and take the canopy off I can hold my hand on the esc but just barely which means its around 100 to 110.

I'll get some real temps next time with my temp gun

6.5 min's of sport flying -->
Motor: 165F
ESC: 115F
Pack: 105F

Matt says this is perfectly fine for this motor. It can take temps in the 180's (and possibly higher).

Ok

Outside temp is around 90
ESC is 130
Motor is 150
Dropped my timing from 5 to 4
Running a 13 tooth pinion and 2050 headspeed.
I like to fly big and fast, giant loops, wide open fly bys
