Motor question
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:32:36 PM »
I am thinking of trying a 6 cell setup. I like my 12cell but a, wanting to see the difference.  I have a 1600kv motor here.  Has anyone tried anything higher than 1100kv and how well did it work if you did try it?

Not a huge difference, but I ran a 1220KV for a while and an 1175KV motor.  1600kv motor would give you some ridiculous head speeds on 6S.  Mr. Mel's calculator says somehting around 2950rpm with a 12T pinion.

Yeah I figured my headspeed would shoot up and I would probably have to take my speed up gears out for the tail.  I am more concerned about having enough torque for full pitch manouvers.  My 500 is just sittimg there collecting dust now that my e5 is in the air so the motor in it would make a nice test motor.  I can pull it down a bit in the 500 so I am skeptical about how well it would work in the e5.  With my gov off I can pull down my 12cell motor enough to make the tail do a dance.  Mind you my throttle curve is set for my sk gov wo the motor is not running in the best range with the gov off.

I'd be more worried about the thrust bearings in the blade grips and the main blade integrity at that head speed.

I don't plan on running it that high.  I run my 500 hard and that is my beater at the moment.  For crazy headspeeds you can't beat the smaller birds for  cheap repair.  I am just asking if anyone tried a higher kv motor and what did they find flight wise with it.

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood your question.  You said you have a 1600KV motor, which lead me to believe you were thinking of using it.

Yes thinking of using it.  Not making use of 3000hs.  But it looks like it won't work as I would need a 9t pinion to get the hs down enough.  Safety first for me.  I spin my 500 up to 3200 with 425 rail blades but the larger blades I am weary about spinning up that fast.

Is it worth the risk? super high head speed can throw a blade. it happen to me years ago with a nitro 60 size bird the destruction is very high, my bird exploded, I thank god no one got hurt. Just something to think about. Cliff

Again I am not looking for super high headspeed.  Hence needing a 9t pinion to keep it down around 2500-2600.  Just was thinking it would of been nice to try 6 cell without having to buy another motor.  With the smallest pinion being a 12t I would have to lower the throttle so much to keep the speed down that the esc and or motor would be super hot

That's still pretty high, anyone running that high? Better buy the best blades out there

No 9t so it won't work.  For 2500hs I have seen a team ikon pilot fly that way steady.  In fact it is his e5 I bought to get mine back in the air.  The rail blades on it are still going on my rebuilt E5.   Currently with my 12 cell setup I run 2370hs so an extra 120 should not be an issue.  Either way without the a availability of a smaller pinion I have to buy a second motor to try the E5 on 6 cell. I may buy one when I get the parts needed to put the second E5 frame I have together again.

Look around maybe you can find a good use one, check ads here and rr, so don"t make a hole in you pocket, maybe someone going to 12s, worth a try.
