Actually I recommend you pull the tail box back about 4mm before pinning. The 716 and 106 can touch on extreme elevator inputs. 4mm is more than enough.

716/116 is hard to do on the e7se but with the 4.9:1 tail ratio you shouldn't need the larger tails.

I tried the 716/116 combo.. With the box pulled back as Chris describes... I had several good flights.. But once I started bang'n her around.. The blades struck each other. I'm now on the 696/116.. It's great! If I were to try the 716s again.. I'd definitely use the 106 tails(with the box pulled back).

This is awesome! I'm stoked! Almost done!!!  8)

Still need to confirm the tail box is square and pin it. I also have to install the tail control rod and a few other odds and ends. I have a list of what needs to be done so I won't forget anything. I need to solder the motor and ESC connectors and install the electronics, minus the servos, as well.

Is play between the main gear auto hub bolt and main shaft normal? see video: https://youtu.be/hP8ZxJfa8Xk

Also, if you look at the picture of the tail; do I have enough clearance to run 116 blades if needed? How much will the mains flex? The tail box is pushed all the way in and the blades are 106/716.

The play in the auto hub to main shaft seems a bit strange. I will have to check my e5 when I get home again but it seems to me that there shouldn't be any. There is a little play between the transmission output and the tail rotor which is very normal.

I would stick to the shorter tail blades if you want to run 116 tails. I have been running the 696 main and 106 tail combo for over a year without fail at 1000 rpm, 1650-1850-2050 rpm ranges. Even at 1000 rpm the tail holds wonderful with the 4:9 tail ratio and I'm flying at 6000' asl.
Thanks,

Thanks, cml001, Josh and Chris! I pulled the tail box back 4mm and pinned it there. I'll be sticking with the 106's.

Josh, thanks for confirming the play in the spur gears is normal! I did a search and found a post in an E7SE thread where Chris says the play between the auto hub bolt and main shaft is normal with this type of main gear design....

I got the connectors on the motor and the motor side of the ESC soldered. I ran out of heat shrink to cover the motor/ESC connectors so I wasn't able to install the motor and ESC on yhe airframe. We got hammered with snow so I couldn't make it out to buy more and I spent all day today shoveling! I'll be able to get more tomorrow.

Hope everyone in the snow path are safe!

Thanks, Danny!

Here's some pictures of the motor and ESC installed. Still figuring out the best way to secure the ESC....any suggestions out there? Will VHB tape or similar melt under the heat when the ESC is running?

No it wouldn't melt. I've used velcro and a small strap either fore or aft of the heatsink a number of times. Ive also used couple lightly tightened zip ties fore and aft of the heatsink before, just don't crank down on them. The strap works like you have it but it kills some airflow over the heatsink and you have to be careful what kind of load you put on the heatsink when you tighten it too.

Thanks....I'm using the strap in the pics temporarily. For the final install I'm thinking of going with some VHB tape and put a small strap fore and aft of the heat sink more for a safety strap. Yeah, zip ties seemed to me that they would cut into the case, so, I didn't wat to use them.

looking good. I usually use the tape you mention plus a nylon tie loosely secured.  the heatsinks generally don't get hot enough to do anything to the nylon ties. For example, a castle shuts off due to overtemp at 212 measured internally. The heatsinks are generally 25 to 35 degrees cooler than the internal temp,.. so you're miles away from melting the plastic ties.

I see the 3470's installed.  I used these arms on one machine http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFVL9&P=7
I have a set for the other heli and plan to install them over the non-flying months, just haven't done it yet.  I don't think they're any better than the stock carbon extension arms. the stock setup may actually be better, as the standard servo wheel gives you a "fuse" in the system, but the aluminim ones look a little nicer, and eliminate installing  4 screws/nuts per servo, which is one place I can't easily use an electric screwdriver.  Yes,.. I'm lazy, old, and have arthritis :)

Thanks, gwright!

Yep, got the 3470's ready to go. I'm goinng to to run them at 7.4V to get the max torque and speed out of them. It was a little tediuos assembling the stock arms with my aging eyes and ability to drop things!  :o

Those arms do look nice. The stock carbon extensions give you perfect geometry, though! I've stayed away from aluminnum arms since starting this hobby 3 years ago. I've heard that the plastic arms can "save" the servo gears in certain crashes by breaking before stripping out the servo gear set. How are the ones your using in a crash?

Got the switch for the buffer pack installed today. The charge lead from the switch is being held in place by double sided tape on the back side of the lower X frame brace so it doesn't bounce around in flight. I also have a servo connector keeper holding the lipo connection together. I taped it to the frame so it doesn't bounce around in flight. I'm getting there!

You actually get correct geometry with the aluminum arms I linked. The outer hole is the same distance as the stock carbon extensions. I'll get to install them on my 700 during the repairs in the next few weeks :(

Due to weather here, haven't flown since october, but it was in the 40's with manageable winds saturday so I loaded up some planks and the E5SS.  Flew several times, and I screwed up an aerobatic auto and rolled out a bit low. Completely my fault. Normally that's massive carnage, but on this machine  all I need is a pushrod, 3 servo gearsets, blades, and boom.  The worst thing about it is my last set of 715 v-blades are gone now  :'(
